In the first six months of 2025, Russian courts (including courts in occupied territories) delivered 224 verdicts in cases of treason, espionage, and confidential cooperation, involving 232 people, almost two people a day, according to a study by the Analytical Center of Kirill Parubets and the 'First Department'*.
In total, during the war, 774 people were convicted under these three articles, all verdicts were guilty, and all convicted received real sentences.
Currently, more verdicts are being delivered in the country per month than, for example, in the entire year of 2022. Throughout 2023, 167 people were convicted under articles on treason, espionage, and confidential cooperation, and in the first half of 2024 — 143 people.
In the first half of 2025, among all 'state security cases', the majority of accusations were for treason — 76% (in 2024 — 68%)
177 out of 232 people were convicted of treason. The share of this article in the so-called 'state security cases' is 76%. In 2024, it was 68%.
Meanwhile, in 2023, a new trend emerged — the combination of charges of treason and terrorism. In 2023, there were 12 such individuals (14% of the total number of individuals in treason and espionage cases), and in 2024, there was a 9-fold increase in absolute terms — 104 individuals, which constituted 29% of the total number (there were 361 individuals in total).
