On the last day of accepting applications for the position of chairman of the Supreme Court, Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov submitted an application, reported RIA "Novosti" citing a representative of the Higher Qualification Collegium of Judges Nikolai Timoshin.
Earlier, "Vedomosti" citing five sources wrote that the "most obvious" candidate for the position of chairman of the Supreme Court is the head of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin. "The position of chairman of the Supreme Court should be taken by a person who is trusted and understood by the first person," said a source close to the Presidential Administration.
On July 22, the head of the Supreme Court Irina Podnosova, a former classmate of Vladimir Putin, passed away. She had been the chairman of the Supreme Court for just over a year.
The chairman of the Supreme Court is appointed by the Federation Council upon the recommendation of the President of the Russian Federation, provided there is a positive conclusion from the Higher Qualification Collegium of Judges.
