The Israel Defense Forces entered Gaza and already control the city's outskirts, said IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Effi Defrin.
As reported by The Jerusalem Post, the day before, Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz approved a plan to take control of Gaza, presented to him by the top Israeli military command. The operation was named «Gideon's Chariot II». For its execution, the Israel Defense Forces will call up 60,000 reservists, and preparation for the evacuation of civilians from Gaza City to the south of the sector for the isolation of Hamas terrorists was also approved.
In his statement, Defrin confirmed that the IDF is working to ensure sufficient space for the safe evacuation of Gaza's civilians, as well as for receiving aid and medical care.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz are expected to approve plans today to capture Gaza City. The discussion will take place against the backdrop of a Hamas proposal, supported by mediators — Egypt and Qatar — for a partial agreement that includes the release of 10 live hostages and a 60-day ceasefire. Ahead of the agreement's approval, Netanyahu ordered to «shorten the timeframes for taking control of the last terrorist strongholds and defeating Hamas».
Israel maintains ambiguity regarding this proposal. On the one hand, on Wednesday, officials reiterated that the goal remains a deal for the release of all hostages. On the other hand, Israel has not rejected the presented proposal. It is assumed that Israel is waiting to see if the offensive on Gaza will push Hamas to conclude a comprehensive deal, according to JP.
