He was accused of attempting to blow up a Ka-27 helicopter at a military airfield

The Southern District Military Court sentenced 36-year-old Sevastopol native Sergey Kucherenko* to 17 years of imprisonment on charges of "treason," "preparation for a terrorist attack," and "illegal handling of explosives," the court's press service reported.

The convict must spend the first five years of his sentence in prison, and the remaining 12 years in a high-security penal colony.

According to the investigation, in April 2022, Ukrainian SBU officers recruited Kucherenko, and he agreed to carry out tasks for the Ukrainian special service. At the same time, Kucherenko allegedly also agreed to work for the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR).

He was instructed to retrieve an explosive substance from a cache in Sevastopol, independently manufacture an explosive device, and then blow up a Ka-27 military helicopter at the military airfield of a separate mixed aviation regiment of the Black Sea Fleet.

Kucherenko received what he "believed to be an explosive substance," which turned out to be a dummy, after which he was detained by law enforcement officers.

In March 2024, Kucherenko was added to the Rosfinmonitoring register of "terrorists and extremists," and in May of the same year, his criminal case was submitted to the court.

* Listed as a "terrorist and extremist."
