CBS: Trump's National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and His Deputy Leave Their Posts at the White House

2025.05.01

Waltz came under a barrage of criticism after he opened a chat in Signal to discuss the strike on the Houthis and mistakenly included Jeffrey Goldberg from The Atlantic in it.

Donald Trump's National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and his deputy Alex Wong will leave their posts at the White House, reported CBS citing sources. They are expected to leave on Thursday.

In March, Waltz came under scrutiny after he opened a chat in Signal and mistakenly included Jeffrey Goldberg from The Atlantic, revealing information about discussions with senior national security officials regarding plans for a military strike on Houthi targets in Yemen. Goldberg published his report, initially without operational details, but after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe refuted the information they shared in the chat, Goldberg published this information as well, including the timing of the strikes and the weapon kits used.

After Waltz acknowledged the authenticity of the report, White House officials discussed his resignation, but Trump expressed his support, calling him a "good man" who "learned a lesson."

Wong worked in the first Trump administration as Deputy Special Representative for North Korea, as well as Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs in the State Department. Announcing his appointment, Trump said that Wong helped negotiate his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
