China raised tariffs on goods from the US to 125%

2025.04.11

This was a retaliatory measure against the US increasing tariffs on Chinese goods to 125% in addition to the existing 20% tariffs

On Friday, China responded to President Donald Trump's actions by raising tariffs on American goods from 84% to 125%, which will take effect from April 12.

A representative of China's Ministry of Commerce stated that China strongly opposes America's unilateral measures and condemns them. Beijing has taken decisive countermeasures to protect its own rights and interests, writes Reuters. At the same time, China urged the US to take steps to remove tariffs and fully correct its wrongful practices. If the US continues to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods exported to the US, China will ignore them, stated China's Ministry of Finance.

The statement from China's State Council was made after Trump administration officials clarified on Thursday that the 125% tariffs are in addition to the existing 20%, so the total minimum tariffs will be 145%.

According to Reuters, after China's statement, the US dollar fell to a decade low against the Swiss franc.

The director of the UN trade agency told Reuters that "mutual tariffs" and countermeasures could have catastrophic consequences for developing countries, even worse than a reduction in foreign aid.

Global trade could shrink by 3-7%, and the global GDP by 0.7%, with developing countries being the most affected, stated the International Trade Center.
