As Reuters writes, citing its sources, American arms deliveries to Ukraine were briefly suspended in recent days and then resumed over the weekend as the Trump administration discussed its policy towards Kyiv. The White House backed away from its initial assessment to stop all aid to Ukraine, two sources said.
In the final months of his administration, Joe Biden approved arms deliveries from American stockpiles to Ukraine averaging more than $1 billion.
US military aid to Ukraine was partly provided through the use of presidential drawdown authority, which allows the president to quickly transfer weapons and equipment from American stockpiles to foreign countries without needing congressional approval.
Since Donald Trump took office, no deliveries have been announced, but it was assumed that the aid authorized by Joe Biden would continue for several months.
The Trump administration has not given a clear signal on whether it will continue to provide significant military aid to Ukraine in its fight against a full-scale Russian invasion.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that the US has provided Ukraine with more military and economic aid than its European allies and expressed an intention to reach an agreement guaranteeing access to Ukrainian rare earth metals. He believes such an agreement could be a condition for continuing American support in the war with Russia.
The strategic importance of Ukraine's rare earth metals was discussed by President Volodymyr Zelensky during the presentation of his "victory plan" last fall. At that time, he also proposed to allies from the US and Europe to conclude an agreement on investing in and protecting valuable metals.
Since the beginning of the conflict, the US has provided Ukraine with military aid worth billions of dollars, including artillery systems, ammunition, and anti-tank missiles.
