Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Russia in 2024 increased by 4% compared to 2023, reaching a record 33.6 million tons, according to data from the analytical company Kpler, reviewed by RBC. The previous maximum was 32.9 million tons, recorded in 2022.
Additionally, in December, Russia broke the record for monthly shipments, sending 3.25 million tons to international markets. This is 1.3% higher than the previous record set in December 2023, and 13.7% more than the level of November 2024.
According to Rosstat, LNG production in Russia decreased by 2.4% in 2023, to 32.9 million tons. The service has not yet published information for the entire 2024, but reported that from January to November, Russian plants increased liquefied natural gas production by 6%, to 31.4 million tons.
Last year, about 52% of all LNG exported from Russia went to the European market — 17.4 million tons. This is 4 percentage points more than in 2023. The largest buyers of Russian LNG in Europe last year were France (6.3 million tons), Spain (4.8 million tons), Belgium (4.4 million tons), and the Netherlands (1.3 million tons).
The remaining volume went to the Asian market — 45% of all supplies (15.2 million tons). The share of the Asian market decreased by 3 percentage points. China (7 million tons) and Japan (5.7 million tons) purchased the most liquefied natural gas from Russia.
