The information about the search for the mathematician, who currently lives in Rio de Janeiro and teaches at the Brazilian Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics, was found in the Ministry of Internal Affairs database by 'Mediazona'**.

On January 10, Verbitsky was added to the list of 'terrorists and extremists' of Rosfinmonitoring with an asterisk next to his name, indicating that a criminal case has been initiated against the mathematician under the 'terrorist' article.

In November 2024, RIA 'Novosti', citing a source, reported that Verbitsky, who condemned the war in Ukraine, is being prosecuted under the article on 'calls for terrorism on the internet'. Later, the charge was specified, stating that the mathematician 'called for strikes on Russia'.

Verbitsky taught at the Moscow Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, the Higher School of Economics, the University of Glasgow, and the Free University of Brussels.

In 2014, Verbitsky was a witness in a criminal case against publicist Boris Stomakhin, who was accused of inciting 'religious hatred', 'calls for extremism', and 'justification of terrorism'. In a conversation with 'Kholod'**, the mathematician suggested that he himself could be held accountable following Stomakhin. Therefore, in 2015, he decided to leave Russia.

In 2023, he moved to Brazil and began working at the National Institute of Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro. He is also the creator of the online platform 'Tifaretnik'.
